Malcolm Browne who took one of the iconic pictures of the 1960’s. He won the Pulitzer Prize in 1964 for his picture of the Buddhist Monk who set himself on fire. On June 11th, 1963 Thich Quang a Buddhist Monk burned himself to death on a busy Saigon intersection. He was protesting the prosecution of Buddhists by the South Vietnameese Roman Catholic led government.
President Kennedy said about the picture “No news picture in history has generated so much emotion around the world as this one”
Malcolm Browne would also win the World Press Photo of the Year Award, the George Polk Award for courage in journalism. He died of complications from Parkinson’s Disease on Sunday at age 81.
