Martin Luther King, Jr. Gives His “I Have A Dream” Speech – This Day 1963

On this day in 1963 Martin Luther King, Jr. gave his famous “I Have A Dream” speech, on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial. The speech was delivered before 200,000 civil rights supporters during the March On Washington For Jobs and Freedom.

The 17 minute long speech was named in 1999 as the greatest American speech of the 20th century. In his speech Dr. King called for racial equality and an end to discrimination.

Martin Luther King, Jr. would be named Time Magazine’s 1963 Man of the Year, he would become the youngest person to win the Noble Peace Prize in 1964. He was assassinated by James Earl Ray in Memphis, Tennessee in April 1968.
