Former major league pitcher Ernie Broglio turns 76 today. He was involved in one of the most lopsided trades in Major League Baseball history. On June 15th,1965 Broglio was traded by the St.Louis Cardinals to the Chicago Cubs for a young outfielder by the name of Lou Brock. Broglio at the time was considered a fine pitcher. He had won 18 games the year before. For his career he would have a 77-74 record. After being traded to the Cubs his career made a quick turn downhill though, he would win 7 and lose 19 for the Cubs in the next two seasons. His last appearance in a big league uniform was July 2nd,1966. Lou Brock would go on to have a Hall of Fame career. Before Rickey Henderson passed him Brock was the all-time stolen base leader. He would have over 3000 hits and have a career batting average of .293. Brock for Broglio is always mentioned when they talk about bad trades a team made [or in the Cardinals case- a steal of a deal.} You have to wonder the Cubs had some decent teams in the late 60’s and early 70’s that just came up short. They had Billy Williams, Ron Santo, Ernie Banks, Ferguson Jenkins all Hall of Famers. Add Brock to that mix, maybe they wouldn’t be saying the last Cubs World Championship 1908.
