Former Vice-Presidential candidate Geraldine Ferraro was born on this day in 1935. In 1984 way behind in the polls the democratic presidential nominee Walter Mondale [who was Vice-President in the failed Jimmy Carter administration} threw a ‘Hail Mary Pass” and named Geraldine Ferraro his running mate. It didn’t help Mondale was beaten like a gong in November by President  Ronaldus Magnus.

Geraldine Ferraro was a Congresswoman from New York. She became a trailblazer, the first woman to be selected as a Vice-Presidential candidate in the history of the United States. Twenty-four years later Republican nominee John McCain would name Sarah Palin his running mate. Sometime this century there will probably be  woman elected president. There are rumblings already that Hillary Rodham Clinton is gearing up a run for 2016. I do not think she will be the first.

After the Mondale/Ferraro ticket was defeated in 1984 [they carried only Mondale’s Minnesota and the Dictrict of Columbia}  Ferraro finished her term in Congress and didn’t seek re-election.  Gerladine Ferraro died last year at the age of 75.
