Pro Football Hall of Famer Steve Van Buren dead at age 91. He died of pneumonia. Steve Van Buren was one of the great running backs of the 1940’s. He played his entire career with the Philadelphia Eagles from 1944 until 1951. He retired due to a knee injury before the 1952 season.
During his career Steve Van Buren rushed for 5860 yards. That does not look impressive under today’s standards and totals but back then when he retired he was the all-time leading rusher in NFL history. He was a powerful, quick running back. He ran the 100 yard dash in 9.8 seconds. He led the Eagles to two world championships. He was a 7 time all-pro and a 4 time rushing champion. In 1999 The Sporting News named Van Buren the 77th greatest player in NFL history.
