Nat Turner Leads Slave Rebellion- This Day 1831

Nat Turner's Conspiracy and Revolt

Nat Turner, a slave in  Southampton County, Virginia started a slave rebellion on this day in 1831. It would be the biggest and deadliest slave rebellion prior to the American Civil war. The rebellion led the the death of 60 whites and over 100 blacks. Turner and his followers went from house to house not discriminating who they killed, men, women, children it didn’t matter. They killed their victims with knives, axes, hatches, blunt instruments. They did not use firearms so.

Nat Turner would not be captured until October 30th. He was tried on November 5th, found guilt and hung on November 11th, 1831. After he was hung he was frayed, beheaded and quartered.

Nat Turner’s goal was to spread terror and alarm the whites in the slaveholding states. I would say his mission was accomplished.

  1. I sometimes wonder if we got the truth of stories like this rebellion. Fear has a way of modifying the real truth, though I do believe that Nat Turner’s body was mutilated after his hanging. It’s also sad that so often in history, change has come about through violence.

    • Very true. I wonder what I would have done if I were in Nat Turner’s position. ..and as far as the truth on things.. winners write the histories.. I have read where Nat Turner was well treated as a slave. It wasn’t like he was mistreated and struck back…but is that the truth? You wonder.
