On this day in 1959 POTUS Dwight Eisenhower signs an executive order proclaiming Hawaii as the 50th state in the Union.  There have been no states added since then- 52 years. This is the longest period of time in American history that no new states have been added. The previous record was 47 years. Arizona was admitted as the 48th state in 1912, Alaska as the 49th state in January 1959.
