Basketball Great- Wilt Chamberlain Born This Day 1936

Wilt Chamberlain one of the greatest basketball players of all time was born on this day in 1936. He died in 1999 at age 63. Wilt Chamberlain was an interesting man. He scored 100 points in a single NBA game. A record that no one has challenged. He did win a couple NBA Championships but the feeling has always been that he should have won more. The feeling also is that Wilt was more of a stats guy than a team player. From what I have read he just wasn’t mean enough. The only stat his rival Bill Russell cared about was World Championships. Wilt was as talented a player as their ever was. He was 7 foot 1 and didn’t like getting attention due to his height. I think his career is hard to evaluate. Great stats-he averaged over 30 points and 22 rebounds a game during his career. He was a 13 times all-star, 11 time rebounding leader, 7 time scoring champion. In his third season in the NBA he AVERAGED 50.4 points a game and 25.7 rebounds a game. The most fascinating stat was he claimed to have slept with 20,000 women. I kind of doubt that stat. I think Wilt was really just a lonely guy. He said no one ever roots for Goliath. He never married. He did say about that 20,000 women that he would have rather have slept with one woman 20,000 times than 20,000 different women.

Wilt has to be one of the top 5 centers of all time. Bill Russell in my opinion was the greatest center, Jabbar comes in at number 2, then I’d go with Wilt.

Wilt was also way ahead of his time, back in the 60’s and 70’s he was one of the greatest beach volleyball players. Maybe one of the best ever.
