Former Ohio State Buckeye running back Archie Griffin turns 58 today. He is the only player in college football history to win two Heisman Trophies. He won the Heisman in 1974 and in 1975 his junior and senior seasons. I always thought Chuck Muncie of California should have won in 1975.
Archie Griffin was the a part of 4 Big Ten Championship teams while at Ohio State playing for the great Woody Hayes. He was also the first player to start in 4 Rose Bowls. He was part of one of the great backfields in college history. Griffin, Brian Bashnagle and Big Pete Johnson were the running backs, Cornelius Greene the quarterback.
Griffin was a first round draft choice by the Cincinnati Bengals, the 24th pick in the 1976 draft. He was an average player at best in the NFL, too small and too slow. Pete Johnson also went to the Bengals and had a better pro career. He was a great college player though. His brothers Ray and Keith also played in the NFL.
