On this day in 1938 the great Lou Gehrig of the New York Yankees hit his 23rd grand slam home run. It is a record that still stands but now he has company, Alex Rodriguez also has 23 grand slams and its probably a good bet that he will break the record.
The record for grand slams in a single season is six. Don Mattingly of the Yankees in 1987 hit six. Strangely those six were the only grand slams he hit in his entire career. Travis Hafner of the Cleveland Indians tied that record in 2006.

Three reasons of many why the Yankees have always been and always will be the greatest franchise in the MLB – 1) Gehrig, 2) Mattingly, and 3) A-Rod.
I think Ruth has a lot to do with it and all those World Series Championships. If the Yanks don’t win another one this century I’d bet they would still have the most. Gehrig was one of the all-time greats. How can anyone say anything about Donnie Baseball.. A Rod isn’t one of the top 20 Yankee greats though. His best years were in Seattle and Texas..
