On this day in 1961 East Germany starts to build the infamous Berlin Wall in an effort to stem the tide of refugees attempting to leave East Berlin. The building of the Berlin Wall would divide East and West Berlin. The wall would stay up until November 1989. One of the most incredible and great moments of the 20th century was watching on television and seeing them ‘tear down that wall”
Imagine a country where they have to build a wall not to keep people out but to keep people in!

“Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall”- American President Ronaldus Magnus

My mother always talked about the Berlin wall because it locked some of her family behind the iron curtain. When the wall came down, my mothers family tried to locate lost family, and to this day they never had. She was gone by time the wall came down, and Germany united again, But she had always talked about a unified Germany, I wish she had lived to see it. Patty
