Just a few thoughts on the selection of Wisconsin’s Paul Ryan as Romney’s running mate.

1. Outside of JFK’s selection of Lyndon Johnson in 1960, Kennedy needed LBJ in Texas and the south to win the presidency when has the vice presidential selection made the difference? Nixon won with Ted Agnew. Bush the Elder won with Dan Quayle. Obama won with Biden. Unless Romney picked the Ghost of Charles Starkweather or Sarah Palin, it probably will not be the difference maker. Ryan appears smart and ready for prime time. I do not see him making the daily screw ups that Sarah Palin did. Ryan will go over well with the conservatives but it will be Romney vs Obama on Election Day that will matter.

2. If Romney loses the election, and Ryan plays his cards right from now until election day, he is the odds on favourite for the Republican nomination in 2016.

3. Isn’t Saturday morning an odd time to announce this? Friday night-Saturday is a bad time for news. I know newspapers are no longer what they once were, it won’t get any play until Monday in the newspapers. Also at the time this was announced half the country was still sleeping and if they weren’t sleeping probably have other things to do on a Saturday morning. Also the Olympics are still going on, why not make this announcement in a few days? Was this THAT urgent?

4.This is Joe Biden’s worse nightmare. Debating Paul Ryan isn’t going to be debating Sarah Palin.

5. My top 3hree picks would have been Condi Rice, Marco Rubio and General David Petraeus.
