Great American Ballpark- Cincinnati, Ohio

A great day at the ballpark.  With the addition of the Great American Ballpark in Cincinnati I have now attended games in 18 of the 30 current major league baseball parks and 34 different major league parks past and present. Next in line has to be Detroit.

  1. I attended Tiger Stadium many times in my youth and once in 1999, the last year it was open. I haven’t been to Comerica and am not sure I want to. Seems sacriligeous on some level.

I’ve also been to the old Comiskey, the old place the Braves and Brewers played in in Milwaukee, and Candlestick Park, but have not been to any of the parks that took their places. Partly it’s logistics in that I no longer get around as much as I used to, but I also have a warm feeling for some of the older parks, as well. Well, maybe not Candlestick.

However, the new park in Cincinnati has to be an improvement over Riverfront Stadium. Enjoy.

    • Tigers Stadium is my favourite of the 34 I’ve been to. I was at the next to last game there. That last year I made the trip up there to see 7 games. The new ballpark has been there for years and I haven’t been there… The old ballparks are missed…not the ones built in the 1970s. I have never heard one person say [I am a Pirates fan} boy I sure miss old Three Rivers.. I never made to old Comisky what was it like?

    • Old Comiskey was old but quaint. I enjoyed it, with the thick coats of dark green paint on the railings and beams, the cavernous outfield and its other eccentricities. I also liked the fact that Shoeless Joe Jackson had played there once.

And, yes, the old NL East was pretty much a disaster as far as Major League ballparks were concerned during the 1970s and ’80s. You had Riverfront, Three Rivers, Olympic Stadium in Montreal, Veterans Stadium in Philly and the old Busch Stadium in St. Louis. If it wasn’t for Wrigley, the whole division would have been a wasteland of multi-purpose facilities.

    • I loved those old old ballparks… the only thing Busch had going for it was the great fans in St.Louis.. I regret not going to a game at Old Comiskey

    • Nothing, for me, was better than Tiger Stadium. It was the first stadium I went to, in mid-1970s, and I was able to take my then-3-year-old son there during the last year it was open.

I really like the new stadiums like Turner Field and Camden Yards, but they can’t replicate the history of places like Tiger Stadium and Fenway Park.

    • Tiger Stadium was my favourite. I like the newer ballparks.. someday i figure they will be looked at like we would look at Tigers Stadium or a Fenway..in 60 years they will have a lot of history behind them…have you been to PNC? that is my current ballpark fave.

    • I have not been to PNC. The only time I was in Pittsburgh was two years ago and the Pirates were out of town. I did check out what remained of old Forbes Field, however. It was extremely odd to find home plate in the middle of a University of Pittsburgh building, encased in plastic.

    • i saw a couple dozen games at Forbes Field as a boy. It was a great place..like all the old places there were bad seats behind beams and all but overall it was a pretty great place. Three Rivers was a dump. PNC is wonderful.. and finally they have a team worthy of the ballpark

    • I was always worried the Pirates would leave, and given the quality of Three Rivers, I don’t know that I would have blamed them. I’m glad a franchise with their history finally has a worthy stadium.

If they ever create an official Baseball Hall of Shame, the inventor of the cookie-cutter stadium gets in on the first ballot, easily.

    • amen to that. i do not know what was going on then..i think the idea was..hey lets make these multi purpose stadiums were all the teams can play in.. terrible for baseball… a lot of great history happened at three rivers because they had some great teams but..terrible place to watch a ballgame… building pnc probably saved the pirates in pittsburgh.. i hate to see teams leave cities..especially teams with long histories in their town.

  2. Have you done Citizen’s Bank Park or Turner Field. I’ve spent a lot of time in both and like each for different reasons, but sections 407 and 408 at Turner are AMAZING values for the money! Had every Friday night home game there when I lived in Atlanta and still miss it. Haven’t found equally good value at CBP, even after being here for years.

    • I was at a game at Turner Field.. wow ten years ago. i liked the ballpark a lot. I haven’t been to Citizens Bank Park but it is high on my list. I live an hour west of Pittsburgh.. Detroit and Philly are next on my list.. I was at the Vet years ago. Close your eyes and you thought you were at Three Rivers. How do you like Citizens?
