When some big event happens you remember where you where when it happened. Usually those events are not sports trades but I can recall clearly where I was when I heard that the Edmonton Oilers had traded the greatest hockey player who ever lived Wayne Gretzky to the Los Angeles Kings for a package of players.
This was one of the most controversial deals ever. Up in Canada there was a meltdown over this. This was one of those deals when I heard it made no sense. It was one of those trades though that was made for a purpose. As they have said in the years since, it was a trade that helped the National Hockey League, there wouldn’t be hockey in a lot of different cities had the Great One not come to America. He would continue to play for another decade. He would break every record in hockey you can think of but he would never win another Stanley Cup Championship.
Where was I at when I heard the news, I was going to my grandmother’s house to cut her grass. I had just pulled up into the driveway when the announcer broke the news. I couldn’t comprehend it.

this changed everything. without this trade, there is no hockey in the southern US. No way do the north stars move to dallas. no phoenix, no florida, tampa, nashville. its not often that a big time trade is made, but i dont think there is any trade in any sport that equaled this for what it meant for the future of the game.
