On this day in 1974 President Richard Milhous Nixon made a farewll speech to his White House staff before leaving and heading back home to California. This speech is much more interesting than the speech where he announced his resignation. My favourite parts in this speech is where he talked about President Theodore Roosevelt and when he talked about his mother. {“My mother, she was a saint”} and where he talked about never hating. This was a man who hated a lot.
It looked like we wouldn’t have Dick Nixon to kick around anymore but he was not to disappear quietly into oblivion. He had some more comebacks in him. Below is the link to his farewell speech to his White House staff.
full disclosure – i liked nixon. i have an autographed photo of richard and pat nixon. i thought he was a flawed individual, but i think that overall his was a pretty good presidency. through his presidency we have the epa, and osha. yes they are a bit cumbersome and some of the bureaucracy have grown those two entities, but worker safety and controlling pollutants have helped the US more than we will know.
he wasn’t a total flop like #39. he had his moments.. a fascinating guy to read about. he was intelligent…paranoia got the best of him… my favourite president to read about- LBJ..that guy made dick nixon seem like a choir boy..
again if nixon had come out and admitted the wrongdoing he would have been fine.
joe pa..bill clinton etc should have learned a lesson from this… also if he hadn’t made those tapes.. his presidency would have been damaged but he probably would have survived… note- do not install taping system when i become president..lol
