Only two athletes have won the Decathlon {The World’s Greatest Athlete} twice. Bob Mathias from the USA won it in 1948 and 1952 and Daley Thompson in 1980 and 1984. Daley Thompson turns 54 today. We saw him at the opening ceremony the other night. I was thinking who lights the flame? I thought it would be either Roger Bannister or Daley Thompson. I was wrong. Thompson is considered by many to be the greatest decathalete of all times. During his career he broke the world record in the event 4 times. Thompson was colorful, sometimes controversial but never boring. His big rival in the 80’s was Jurgen Hingsen, they traded breaking the record back and forth but Thompson always rose to the occasion and won the big events. Thompson competed in the 1988 games -finishing fourth.
