The great Dutch post-impressionist painter Vincent Van Gogh shot himself on this day in 1890. He would die 2 days later. According to his brother Theo, Vincent’s last words were “The sadness will last forever” Vincent Van Gogh was only 37 years old. At the time of his death his work was known by a handful of people and appreciated by even less. In death he would become one of the most famous and greatest artists who ever lived.
An outstanding new book came out last year about Van Gogh called “Van Gogh:A Life”- by Steven Naifeh and Gregory White Smith.
i never really understood the attraction to van gogh. i liked his paintings, and could see that he had talent, but even if i were top 5 on the forbes billionaires list i would not want to own one.
i think we disagree on this one.. i think van gogh was unbelieveable.. his paintings filled with such emotion…my favorite painter.. sherwin williams is at #2…
*laughing* at the sherwin williams comment. awesome.
interesting – i never saw you as a van gogh fan. i do not deny his talent. just not my taste. i never got dali, or monet much either honestly. now i do like frederic remington’s work. the subject matter of most of his work i am ok with – the western scenes etc, but i think the paintings themselves capture so much more.
