From the time that I was young I have been obsessed with the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. It may be because it is an event I have little memory of. I was about to turn 3 years old when it happened.
I have read over the years dozens of books-ranging from great to garbage on the JFK assassination. I visited Dealey Plaza and the School Book Depository Building back in 1992 and 1993. After 19 years I have been wanting to return for some time. It didn’t look like it was going to happen this year but being able to add a day to the vacation made it possible.
Up until the time I visited the place 20 years ago- I was a believer in a conspiracy. I figured Lee Oswald was involved in the shooting-certainly one of the shooters but that there was more people involved. After visiting the site and spending some time there, and with further reading- Gerald Posner’s “Case Closed” being the most influential I slowly changed my mind. I believe now that Lee Oswald was the lone gunman and I believe that Lee Oswald was a conspiracy of one. Am I 100 % sure of this? No. I don’t know how anyone can be 100 % sure on this either way. It will never be completely solved now. There are scores of books on the Kennedy assassination. Proceed with caution. Some are so far out that even the conspiracy believers would have to question. {DO NOT watch “JFK” by Ollie Stone and think that is what happened. I have met people who believe that is actually what happened. Stone picked the worst of the bunch to make a movie on- Jim Garrison was cracked and the film is rubbish in my humble opinion- good movie making but has little to do with reality}
The other times I was there- not too many people were around. On this day we arrived at 10am as the Sixth Floor Museum was about to open and there was a long line waiting to get in. I wonder if the recent book by Stephen King “11-22-63” has something to do with that? Either way I was surprised so many people were. More on the Sixth Floor Museum later.
i would agree with you on some of this – frankly as nuts as LHO was i am not sure i would want him involved in ANY conspiracy.
now here is where we differ. if this had happened in any other state i might buy that. this being landslide lyndons home state is just over the top. i think a lot of things were botched simply because no one had dealt with a potus being shot since mckinley (i think).
LHO was not that good of a shot, and the rifle was not a good weapon either. however random mathematics and factors seem to have lined up here and it happened.
there always seems to be a dispute as to LHO’s abilities with a gun- I’ve read where he was quite good while in the marines..others say not.. the gun wasn’t a reliable gun…the stars seemed aligned in LHO”s favor i guess that day..i agree it happening in Texas- LBJ’s home state and knowing LBJ’s goal in life was–to be president.. As awful as LBJ could be- I don’t think he wanted it THAT bad…
