The First Baseball All- Star Game- This day in 1933

On this day in 1933 they played the first Major League Baseball All- Star game at Comiskey Park in Chicago. The American League won the game 4-2. The first all -star game home run-it was struck by Babe Ruth. How appropriate was that! There was a time when the MLB All-Star game was one of the big events on the sports calendar, in recent years [say the last 25 years it seems to have lost its luster} There have been over the years a lot of iconic moments in the all-star game. Ted Williams 3 run home run with 2 out in the ninth-inning giving the AL a win in 1941 may be the greatest moment in ALG history. As a young fan I will never forget Pete Rose running over Ray Fosse to win the game in 1970[ and altering the career of Ray Fosse, a young budding star who suffered a separated shoulder in the play, he was never the same player again}

The American League leads the series 42-38 with 2 ties. In recent history there seems to be big streaks- back in the 1960s 1970’s the National League dominated. In the past two decades the American League has. I don’t know if one game determines a whole lot but the general feeling back in the 60’s and 70’s was that the National League was the better league and in the 90’s and 00’s it seemed like the American League had the best players. I don’t agree with Allan “Bud” Selig Jr. making the All-Star game winning the league with home field advantage in the World Series.

The All-Star Game is coming up next Tuesday. I don’t see myself watching it. I haven’t watched a complete all-star game in 20 years.

    • That would have been something to see… Also I was looking at the 1933 rosters. They only had 3-4 pitchers on each roster.

    • Yep…every pitcher threw a complete game almost every time they took the mound. No need for 10-15 pitchers!

    • i made a post yesterday about changes i’d make in baseball-one would be to limit the number of pitchers on the roster to 10. Speed the game up. Nothing in the world is more boring than watching 3 pitching changes during an inning…yes now they throw 5 or 6 innings and its considered an accomplishment..
