The Baseball Hall of Fame needs some changes/ Bill Simmons article

Roughly 15 years ago the great Bill James put out a book on the Baseball Hall of Fame and he proposed some changes. They would be great changes in my opinion. He outlined a “Pyramid of Fame” in which all Hall of Famers wouldn’t be on the same level as they are now but on 5ive levels. The bottom level being the players who were debatable Hall of Famers..all the way up to the top level where you would have your handful of all time immortals {Ruth, Cobb, Mays, Williams etc}

Since I got interested in baseball as a young kid I have always been kind of obsessed with the Hall of Fame questions. Who should be in, who shouldn’t be etc.. They have made mistakes over the years on players. You can’t go throwing people out who are already in but I think going with this pyramid would be great and would make the HOF more interesting. Can you imagine -Junior Griffey is eligible in a couple years.. no question he goes in-but what level will he be? He’s not at the top I don’t think but is he in the next tier down or the middle tier? This would promote all kinds of discussion.

BIll James book explains it all better than I can and its his ideas. Bill Simmons had a story a number of years ago that I will repost that pretty much sums it up.

More posts on the Baseball Hall of Fame to come…. I also think there should be like the Hockey Hall- a wing for contributors. {Bill James would go in in my opinion, Curt Flood may not have been a HOF player but he’d go in.. Marvin Miller} also a section for Great Baseball Moments.. Mazeroski’s homer, Bobby Thompson’s homer. Bird Fidrych’s 1976 season etc}
