Part II of the changes I will be making to baseball once they make me “Czar of Baseball”
- We go back to 2 14 team leagues. 7 teams in a division. Miami and Tampa Bay are illiminated.
- The playoffs- the two winners of the divisions in each league will play a best of 7. winners meet in the world series. none of this wild card garbage.
- The games last way too long- there is too much dead time in these marathon games. I will be making a few changes to speed the game up. 1- On the 25 man roster teams will only be able to have 10 pitchers. Back in the day every team carried 10- The Orioles under The Earl of Baltimore would carry 9. Teams now have 12 or 13. That means 7 or 8 bullpen pitchers and countless pitching changes. Managers wouldn’t be making change after change with only 5 pitchers in the bullpen. 2. A time clock on pitches. A pitcher has 14 seconds once he receives the ball to make a pitch. I have never seen this enforced. NEVER. I have been watching baseball since 1967. Some pitchers get the ball and really labor out there. The 14 second clock goes off- ball. 3- once a batter steps in the batters box he’s in. And also we will eliminate the songs they play for each hitter when he walks up to the plate. 4-Also a limit on how many times a catcher can go to the mound during a game and how many times a pitching coach/manager can go to the mound during a game.
- Instant Replay. Used only on really close plays. Not on balls and strikes. Was the ball fair or foul? Was the runner at the plate safe or out?
- Revenue Sharing. The key to the parity in the NFL over the years is revenue sharing. The smartest thing the great Pete Rozelle ever did back in the 1960’s. Sorry New York Yankees but we are putting every team on the same playing field here. All the money earned goes into the pot and will be divided up evenly by all 28 MLB teams. The Pittsburgh Pirates, Kansas City Royals etc. will have as much of an opportunity to win as the New York Yankees and the Boston Red Sox.
My final change will be in the next post and it isn’t about changes on the playing field but changes to the Baseball Hall of Fame. Changes need to be made-radical changes and as Czar of Baseball I will make those much needed changes.
i think that the players unions would be putting a hit out on you. i do not disagree on your points however.
with the williams post earlier and thinking about this, i always remember the things that bob feller said. he stated that ted williams was the only player that he never had to wait on to get in the batters box. he stated that before he had the ball back in his hands to get ready to pitch, williams was already camped in the batters box. we need more of that these days.
Agreed on instant replay. The game really needs it.
And can we please get rid of pitch counts??? A pitcher’s arm isn’t going to fall off if he throws 115 pitches!
they baby these guys so badly. no pitcher has had 300 innings in a year since Steve Carlton like 30 years ago…and they go on about these relief pitchers…back in 1974- my favorite season for a relief pitcher- mike marshall 106 games. 208.1 innings pitched.15-12 record with 21 saves..all in relief…. i can understand pitch counts if the pitcher is 20-21 years old but once these guys have matured.. i totally agree with you.
