Jim Morrison- singer for The Doors-found dead in his bathtub in Paris on this day in 1971. I recall when Kurt Cobain killed himself [over 18 years ago which is hard to believe} his mom said “Now he’s gone and joined that stupid club.” The Club being the rock stars who died at age 27. Included in that group-Robert Johnson, Jimi Hendrix, Brian Jones of The Rolling Stones, Janis Joplin, Jim Morrison, Amy Winehouse, Kurt Cobain and others.

I liked The Doors. I have all their CD’s but having said that I believe they are the most overrated group in rock music history. Jim Morrison the single most overrated person in rock history. The calling of Morrison ‘a poet’ is laughable.

The Doors had a great album-The Doors-The Doors, they put out some great songs but they also put out a lot of garbage. At the time of his death Jim Morrison was a spent force. He was a self destructive drunk. If he had lived I do not think there would be all this worshipping of The Doors. The Doors are bigger after Morrison’s death than they ever were while he was alive. I always thought the turning point was when “The End” was included in the movie “Apocalypse Now”[a great great movie} after that The Doors became huge.

There have always been these rumours that Morrison faked his death and was living in Africa. He’s dead. The way his life was going a lot of those close to him were not surprised when he died.  You can’t treat your body like he treated his and live long-unless your Keith Richards.

A side note- Ray Manzarek the keyboard player for The Doors. Every once in a while you see the guy pop up on tv and it’s always “Me and Jim man”… The 60’s are over. Time to move on Ray.
