I hope it is for the reasons he stated and not because he is in financial distress. I wonder what they will get? Palmer is a Hall of Famer. One of the best pitchers of his era. Those Orioles teams of the mid 60’s-to mid 80’s had great pitching. I remember when they had 4 20 game winners in 1971- Palmer-Dotson-McNally and Cuellar. I also remember late in that 71 series against the Pirates- they had 3 of those 4 warming up in the bullpen at the same time as the Pirates rallied and won that series. Roberto Clemente’s finest hour.
In 1979 they also had a great staff-McGregor-Flanagan-El Presidente Dennis Martinez-The Stone Pony Steve Stone and Palmer. The Pirates were down 3 games to 1 in that series-then took care of business winning 3 in a row to take the series in 7. Willie “Pops” Stargell leading the Pirates to the promise land.
I always liked how the Orioles did things back then. Pitching and 3 run homers. That is how you win. Right Earl?
