The Great Western Vacation-Day 4-Mount Rushmore

About 45 minutes from Rapid City, South Dakota-out in the Black Hills is the famous Mount Rushmore. I had been there with my grandparents when I was fifteen. About 20 years ago I went again-but it was very foggy that day and you couldn’t see a thing.  Things have changed in 20 years. They have added a lot-including a parking garage and a $12 fee to park your car. I am pretty certain 20 years ago you just pulled your car into the lot and walked up. They have also added a number of visitor centers/souvenir shops to the place. We saw a girl who was working in one of those souvenir shops-who looked like Conin O’Brien. People were openingly commenting to her on it. Poor girl.  Three million people a year visit Mount Rushmore.

Gutzon Borglum was the sculptor behind Mount Rushmore {and also Stone Mountain in Georgia} It took from 1927-41 to complete.

We got there in the evening around 7pm. It was a pretty clear day so we were able to get a good look at it. A good size crowd was there. Mount Rushmore is a great sight to see. The only thing that would improve on what has already been done is to add a fifth president Ronaldus Magnus . I have mixed feelings on Thomas Jefferson but what can you do-he’s already there.

Just traveling advice if you are ever in South Dakota to go to Mount Rushmore- be sure you go to The Badlands. You can look at Mount Rushmore for only so long- The Badlands has a million great views.
