The Great Western Vacation Day 2- June 12,2012- Springfield, Illinois- The Lincoln Home

We started off Day 2- going into downtown Springfield and seeing the home where Abraham Lincoln lived in Springfield. This is also the place where he spent his happiest years. Before this time he had lived a hard life on the frontier. Here is where he settled down, got married and had 4 sons. He would leave Springfield for the presidency- and his entire presidency he had to deal with the great American Civil War.

There is a nice visitor center a block from the home. They have the streets blocked off from traffic and returned to the way it looked back in the 1850’s when Lincoln lived there. The homes on those blocks were ones who were there at the time.

We took the tour of the Lincoln home that lasted a good half hour. The house and the rooms have been restored. The tour guide said up until about 20 years ago-right across the street from the Lincoln home there had been a Piggly Wiggly but it was correctly thought- we have a special place here. They tore down the Piggly Wiggly and restored the block to how it looked.

Anyhow back to the house. Really neat going into the rooms where Lincoln had lived. The tour guide was knowledgable. You don’t always get good tour guides this one was good and full of good info.
