The Beatles Song Of The Day is “Mr. Moonlight.” “Mr. Moonlight” is on the album “Beatles For Sale.” This is a cover of a song written by Roy Lee Johnson. This is an example of why those around The Beatles should have given them some time to rest between albums. After writing all the songs for “A Hard Day’s Night” earlier in the year they wanted more product from The Beatles before the end of 1964. On “Beatles For Sale” they didn’t have enough material written for a new album so they went and covered six songs to fill in the 14 album cuts needed. They had released “A Hard Day’s Night” only two months before they began recording “Beatles For Sale.” The album cover of “Beatles For Sale” tells the story. The Beatles look so tired. As I asked in an earlier post-did any of them get any sleep in 1964? “Mr.Moonlight” is dreadful. One of the worst things that The Beatles ever released. The original recording by Dr. Feelgood and the Interns was released as a single in January 1962 and ws not a hit. The Beatles would play this song in concerts in 1962-63. John Lennon: vocal and acoustic rhythm guitar/ Paul McCartney: harmony vocal, bass guitar and Hammond organ/ George Harrison: harmony vocals, lead guitar and African drums/ Ringo Starr: percussion. The song was recorded on August 14th,1964 at Abbey Road. Producer: George Martin.
Rating “Mr. Moonlight” on a scale of 1 to 5 stars *
- “Mr. Moonlight” was not released as a single.
- “Mr. Moonlight” did not make Rolling Stones “The Beatles 100 Greatest Songs’ or Spignesi and Lewis’ “100 Best Beatles Songs” lists. Neither list ranked covers. This song wouldn’t have made it even if they did. Dreadful.
- Length of song: 2:40.
