Jeffrey Leonard aka The Hac Man- turns 57 today. Jeffrey Leonard played 13 seasons in the major leagues from 1977 to 1990. He was nicknamed “HacMan” after the popular computer game. He was most famous for his ‘one flap down’ routine when he would hit a home run. He would run the bases with one arm hanging motionless at his side.
Leonard played for 5ive teams and was a two time all-star. His best years were with the San Francisco Giants. He had a reputation as a difficult personality. His finest moments came in the 1987 NL Championship Series in which he hit 4 home runs and hit .417. He is the last player to win the MVP of a League Championship Series or World Series and be a member of the losing team.
Leonard was later for a time a minor league manager in the A’s organization. I know a guy who played for him in the minors. I had to ask “What was Jeffrey Leonard like to play for” He said “He was moody. One day he would be talking to everyone, in a good mood, the next day he wouldn’t talk to anyone and would have the door to his office shut. It was always interesting.” I remember when I heard Leonard was managing finding it an odd choice but then again Billy Martin wasn’t easy to get along with.

Leonard came into his own for the Giants. He did virtually nothing with the Astros. I am still surprised none of the StL pitchers put one in his earhole.
And though it was not a good audio clip I long for the days when Vin Scully and Joe Garigiola called the game of the week and playoffs for NBC.
