The 9th Presidential Election In United States History- 1820- James Monroe- Unopposed!

President James Monroe’s time as POTUS was known as “the era of good feelings” there was no big crisis going on, things seemed to be moving smoothly. When POTUS Monroe ran for re-election in 1820 he ran unopposed. The third and last time this would happen in the history of the United States. The Federalist Party was history. They were finished. No one opposed Monroe’s re-election. Not having anyone to oppose George Washington was one thing, but to let James Monroe win re-election unopposed? Daniel Tompkins would once again be the Vice Daddy.

President Monroe  won 231 of the 232 electoral college votes. One elector-William Plumer a former Governor of New Hampshire voted for John Quincy Adams [who was Monroe’s Secretary of State} Plumer wanted to make sure that George Washington would be the only POTUS to win election unanimously.

So far in the nine Presidential Elections in the history of the United States only two were closely contested, the 1796 Election where Adams beat Jefferson and the rematch in 1800 where Jefferson topped Adams. This all was about to change forever with the election of 1824!
