On this day in 1926 the great Harry Houdini spent 91 minutes underwater in a sealed tank before escaping, possibly his greatest feat. He would die in less than 3 months from that time on October 31st at the age of 52.

Houdini fascinates me. It is because of him that fortune telling was banned in New York State, after the first world war.
In Mikal Gilmore’s book about his family that came out maybe 20 years ago- a great read- [he is the brother of Gary Gilmore-last man to be executed in US by firing squad– it was thought that Houdini may have been Gary Gilmore’s grandfather…
