100 Great Songs From The British Invasion: 1963-1966. ‘Time Is On My Side’- The Rolling Stones.
The Rolling Stones in 1964 had three Hot 100 singles on the US Billboard Pop chart- with two making the Top 40-‘Tell Me’ #24 and ‘It’s All Over Now’ #26 before they had their first Top 10 hit- which came in late 1964- ‘Time Is On My Side” #6. The Stones started out as an R&B cover band and compared with some of the other bands that rode The Beatles wave onto the American charts- it took them a while to hit their stride- which came when Mick Jagger and Keith Richards got down to writing their own songs instead of covering others- which isn’t to say that their covers aren’t interesting. ‘Time Is On My Side’ was a cover-which was first recorded in 1963 as a jazz song by trombonist Kai Winding. In early 1964 Irma Thomas released an R&B cover- in which more words were added to the song-which at that point consisted of only ‘time is on my side’ and ‘you’ll come running back.’ The Rolling Stones would incorporate the changes that were made for the Irma Thomas cover into their own. The distinctive lead guitar on The Rolling Stones version- was played by Brian Wilson. ‘Time Is On My Side’ wasn’t released as a single in the UK- it was an album track. In the US it would be their biggest hit until mid 1965 when they had their big breakthrough with a #1 ‘Satisfaction.’
