Hans Hot 100 Beatles Songs: #97: ‘The Inner Light’-
By 1968 when George Harrison’s ‘The Inner Light’ was released as the b-side to ‘Lady Madonna’- George had established himself as a songwriter but this was the first time that one of the songs he had written-was given even a b-side of a single.
Like #98- “You Know My Name [Look Up The Number’] this is one of The Beatles songs which you will rarely hear on the radio- and it wasn’t included on any albums until the late 80’s with the compilation album Past Masters II. I’d be lying if I said that when I first got into The Beatles in the mid- 60’s that I immediately liked George’s classical Indian music influenced songs. Over the years though they certainly grew on me. Because of the hugeness of The Beatles- it’s kind of hard to come up with very many songs you could call -underrated gems- but I think The Inner Light certainly would fit into that category. George recorded this song in Bombay, India- making it the only Beatles song recorded outside of Europe.
