This was Madonna’s 4th Hot 100 single- and first of an eventual dozen #1 hits. It was also the #1 hit that was #1 the longest- in her career. I think it’s the single which signaled she was going to be around for a long long time. ‘Like A Virgin’ was the #1 hit the last couple weeks of 1984 and the first month of 1985. She would rule the singles chart for the rest of the decade and into the early years of the 1990’s. Like her or not [ I like her singles- not a fan of the persona- ] she was a genius at selling her brand.

  1. I was a pretty big fan of Madonna until the late 90s, and liked this song a lot when it came out. I don’t think it’s aged well, though, and I’m surprised you graded it an A+. Other music snob friends I know with similar tastes as yours liked some of her songs but hated ‘Like a Virgin’.

  2. I loved the phenomenon of Madonna. So many good pop songs. Always entertaining videos and I loved at least one of her live taped tour shows. A Bay City, Michigan girl. Mom died when she was 5. “Motherless children have a hard time…” She turned her grief into fame.
