One of the greatest break-up songs ever. “It’s Too Late’ the lead off single from Carole King’s 1970’s landmark album Tapestry went to #1- her only #1 as a performer. Carole King in the 1960s along with her then husband Gerry Goffin had established themselves as premier songwriters- having written 4 #1 hits and countless other hits. As a performer going into 1971 and Tapestry- she was unproven-having only had one Top 40 hit and her debut album peaked at #84- so all the success of the Tapestry album had to have felt at the time like it came out of nowhere. The album won a Grammy for Album Of The Year and ‘It’s Too Late” won for Record Of The Year. She would have other hit albums and hit singles but this is the album she is and will be remembered by. One of those few albums in which every song feels like it is a classic.

  2. One of the best albums of the 70s for sure. My girlfriend, now wife, wore that record out. If she wasn’t listening to Tapestry, then it was Joni Mitchell or Cat Stevens. She always said, if you wanted to have a good cry, listen to Tapestry.

    • I think I’d vote it as the best singer-songwriter album from that era- with a Joni Mitchell right behind with Court And Spark and Blue.

  3. Fifty years late – I just picked up a second hand copy of Tapestry! Not generally my style of music, but Carole King and James Taylor must have saturated my subconscious as a kid. 😉
