‘I Love Rock And Roll’ was originally written and recorded in 1975 by the Arrows. Alan Merrill one of the songwriters said he wrote the song as a direct response to The Rolling Stones “It’s Only Rock And Roll [But I Like It.} Joan Jett heard the song in 1976 while touring in England with The Runaways. In 1979 she recorded it with two members of the Sex Pistols-Steve Jones and Paul Cook. In 1981 she re-recorded it with her band The Blackhearts- and the single received heavy airplay on both the radio and on MTV- and it shot to #1- where it stayed for 7 weeks. Rolling Stone magazine listed it as #491 in their 500 Greatest Songs Ever list.

  1. While I think it’s fair to say the tune has been overexposed, it’s a great rock riff, and Joan Jett’s cover still is fun to listen to. In fact, I saw her open up for The Who in Forest Hills, N.Y. in May 2015, and she was still rockin’ mightily!
