Under The Covers- Other Artists Covering Beatles Songs: ‘Misery’- Kenny Lynch. I would love to have one dollar- for every Beatles cover that has been made over the past nearly sixty years. I have no idea how many covers have been made of Beatles songs but there have certainly been thousands- hundreds of thousands. It all started with this one- ‘Misery’- a song written by Lennon- McCartney- originally written for Helen Shapiro a popular female singer in the UK at the time who the early Beatles toured with- but having been rejected by her record company- Kenny Lynch recorded and released it becoming the first cover of a Beatles written song – released by another artist. Lynch would later find his way on the cover of Wings Band On The Run album a decade later. Lynch had a handful of hits in the UK- ‘Misery’ was not a success for him. He also acted in films and television. He passed away in 2019 at the age of 81. A funny little note- Lynch was on that UK tour with Shapiro and The Beatles- and at one point offered to help them write a song- but became frustrated and criticized their ability to compose music. At the time John and Paul were working on ‘From Me To You.’
Nice background story! 🙂
Loved the background. The only Beatles song I ever covered was Norwegian Wood.
I don’t remember whether or not I’ve ever heard this version, but it’s not bad.
