My Music Listening Journal: Day 41: Wednesday February 10, 2021.
- DAVID BOWIE: NEVER LET ME DOWN: 1987: 1 STAR OUT OF 5 STARS: ITUNES: ROCK: David Bowie’s 17th album- was his career low. I thought Tonight from 1984 was bad- this is much worse. Bowie would quickly disown it himself. The production is so 1980’s- it sounds horrible and the songs sound half baked. It’s hard to believe this is the same cutting edge artist from the 1970’s- but I guess everyone if they have long enough of a career has their down period.
- JOHNNY CASH: AMERICAN RECORDINGS: 1994: 5 STARS OUT OF 5 STARS: IPOD: FOLK, COUNTRY: And speaking of artists who had their down periods- and then bounced back in a big way. Johnny Cash had been in both a commercial and critical down spin for nearly two decades. His place in music history was assured even if he had been finished as an artist- but he did make a miraculous comeback after signing with Rick Ruben- this was the first album of the comeback. While commercial country radio ignored it- the album was a critical success- and there would be more to come even after his passing in 2003. This was nothing fancy just Johnny and his guitar and some great songs.
