This song certainly brings back memories- and not good ones. In the fall of 1977 you couldn’t turn the radio on without hearing this single. It would thankfully turn out to be Debby Boone’s only Top 40 single. I have always thought the success of a song led to a backlash against her. By the time the song played out I think even a large percentage of people who liked it had grown to hate it. I think there was also the factor that Debby Boone was well the daughter of Pat Boone the most soulless singer of the 20th Century. The genes carried over to poor Debby. The song was originally released as a single by Kasey Cysik from the movie You Light Up My Life- in the film it was lip-synced by Didi Cohn. The Kasey Cysik single was released first and went to #80. I admit to having this single- my sister bought it and played it endlessly. A few years later she abandoned her singles collection and I took them- and I can’t throw anything away.

Debby Boone won a Grammy for Best New Artist- and “You Light Up My Life” was the biggest chart hit of the 1970’s in America. The 10 weeks at #1 was also a record at the time.

  1. I quite liked Kasey Cisyk’s version, maybe because I saw in context in the movie and it didn’t have the feel of being a contemporary Christian song. That was Debby’s doing…
