  • One of the most anticipated match-ups of the year- turned out to be a dud as the Texas Longhorns the #1 ranked College Football team defeated their rivals #4 Arkansas Razorbacks 42-7 to end the regular season with a 10-0 record. Texas would be voted National Champion by UPI who at that time voted on their National Champion after the regular season. In the Cotton Bowl on January 1 Texas would lose and Notre Dame would win the AP poll of sportswriters vote as National Champions.
  • In the NFL a record setting day for Willie Ellison of the Los Angeles Rams who ran for a record setting 247 years rushing against the New Orleans Saints. The record had been held by the great Jim Brown 237 years. Today the record is Adrian Peterson 296 in 2007.
  • In music what turned out to be an amazing chart feat -“Amazing Grace’ by Judy Collins entered the UK singles chart for the first of eight times, it spent a total of 67 weeks on the chart never making the No.1 position. ‘Amazing Grace’ is a Christian hymn with lyrics written by the English poet and clergyman John Newton which was first published in 1779
