Born Laura Nigro in the Bronx, New York in 1947- Laura Nyro was best known as a singer-songwriter. She wrote songs that were hits for others- The 5th Dimension, Blood, Sweat and Tears, Three Dog Night, Babs Streisand but her only Hot 100 hit was this one – a cover of the Goffin-King classic which was a #5 hit by The Drifters. Laura Nyro died of cancer in 1997 at the age of 49. She was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2012.
I really like her cover of this great song. Everybody needs a roof they can climb up on.
She was a musical treasure.
