One of the worst #1 hits ever- one of the worst songs ever. It was originally written and recorded by Jacques Brel a Belgium singer- songwriter. Rod McKuen translated it in 1964 and The Kingston Trio first recorded it in English and a decade later it fell to Terry Jacks who had a monster hit all over the world with it. My sister and sister-in-law who were born a week apart love this song. My sister would play the single and cry. My sister-in-law loves the song because it mentions here name.
My best friend died of leukemia the same year this song was big.
Sorry to hear that.
Absolutely agree with you.
Such a pandering to sappiness!
Ironically one of, maybe THE biggest Canadian hit of the 70s…but also one few of us Canucks want to claim ! Dreadful piece, although he & his sis did some OK tunes together as the Poppy Family
it amazes me how many countries it was a #1 hit in- as you said- dreadful–but popular for some reason.
I can confirm “Seasons in the Sun” also was a big hit in Germany at the time. I recall hearing it frequently on the radio.
I liked it then. While I’m no longer as fond of it, I actually don’t feel it’s a terrible song.
There are other tunes I also dug when I was much younger, where I’m now asking myself how could I have liked them. They shall remain unnamed! ๐
Aw come on- name us some of the unnamed! lol.
OK. Here are three terrible ones:
– Racey/Lay Your Love On Me
– Smokie/Living Next Door to Alice
– Exile/How Could This Go Wrong – appropriate title! ๐
I don’t know if I know any of them- will have to look them up!
Be prepared for some terrible music! ๐
Smokie were incredibly popular in Germany. The one good thing about them is they introduced me to “Needles and Pins,” a song I really like. Only afterwards did I find the original by The Searchers and my favorite version, which is the cover by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers.
