Paul McCartney’s “My Love” was replaced at #1 by another former Beatle- George Harrison’s “Give Me Love”- and that was replaced by Billy Preston often called the 5th Beatle- with “Will It Go Round In Circles.” Preston had played organ and electric piano on The Beatles Get Back sessions- and in a more limited role on Abbey Road. John Lennon at one time proposed that Preston be asked to join The Beatles- which was rejected by Paul- who said it was hard enough to get four people to agree on something let along five.

Preston started as a 16 year old in Little Richard’s band. In the 1970’s he continued to be associated with George Harrison in his solo career and with Eric Clapton and The Rolling Stones. From 1972-74 Preston had four Top 5 hits- including another #1 in 1974 with “Nothing From Nothing.” The b-side to “Will It Go Round In Circles” is The Beatles “Blackbird.”
