The final entry into the Billboard Hot 100 by The Turtles. A remake of the Barry McGuire hit. From 1965-70 The Turtles had 17 Hot 100 Singles with 9 making the Top 40. Their biggest hit went to #1 in 1967- “Happy Together.” The pop-rock band formed in Los Angeles were led by Howard Kaylan and Mark Volman- both of whom would later join Frank Zappa’s Mother Of Invention.
Wow, I had no idea The Turtles covered that tune. Given the cheerful topic, I think Barry McGuire’s voice on the original is a better fit. The Turtles sing “too pretty”!
True- it’s not a happy song. I never knew they covered it either-until now.
Frankly, I’m mostly aware of The Turtles because of “Happy Together.” And while I guess it’s fair to say it’s the song that’s typically played when you hear them on the radio, I still love it – one of the catchiest ‘60s tunes I know!
The Turtles’ version was originally recorded in 1965 prior to McGuire’s version, and was included on their debut album “It Ain’t Me Babe”, but never released as a single until 1970. It seems rather odd that they and/or their label would have decided to release it at that time. Last gasp attempt for a hit I imagine.
Why did I never take the Turtles messaging seriously?
CB likes the Turtles.
