The White Album was released in 1968 and peaked at #1 in the Billboard Album Chart, #1 in Canada, #1 in the UK, and #1 about everywhere else…and it would be #1 as well on “Max’s Desert Island.”

Is this considered the Beatle’s best album? Probably not but if I had to take just one with me to that proverbial desert island…this would be the one. They have albums that are considered better like Revolver and Sgt Pepper but I relate to the rawer songs on this album. The album’s actual name is “The Beatles” but for obvious reasons, it will forever be known as the White Album.

When John Lennon was killed in1980 there were three albums I bought that long winter. Double Fantasy, The White Album,  and Abbey Road. I’m back there again in that 1980-81 winter and spring when I hear this album.

The White Album is as diverse as you can get… Pop, Rock, Country, Folk, Reggae, Avant-Gard, Blues, Hard Rock, and some 20’s British Music Hall thrown in the mix. It has plenty of songs that you have heard of and many that the masses have not heard as much. John Lennon wrote one of his best songs for this album… Dear Prudence.

The Beatles more than many bands could bend to a style of music and play that style well.

Some critics said they should have taken the best of the two albums and slimmed it down to one…but as a Beatle fan…Nahhhhh. It’s the friggin Beatles White Album!

My favorite songs: Sexy Sadie, Dear Prudence, While My Guitar Gently Weeps, Cry Baby Cry, Helter Skelter, I Will, I’m So Tired, Revolution 1, Yer Blues, Everybody’s Got Something to Hide Except For Me and My Monkey, Back In The USSR, Rocky Raccoon, Happiness Is A Warm Gun and Glass Onion.

Are all of the 30 songs up to the Beatle’s high standards? No, but more than enough are to make this a great double album.

Although the songs differ in style they all have that Beatles touch to them whether it be the hard Helter Skelter, country Rocky Raccoon, or even the fairytale-like Cry Baby Cry.

The sessions were not the happiest time for the band but they came up with the most eclectic batch of songs they ever produced.

  1. Back In The USSR
  2. Dear Prudence
  3. Glass Onion
  4. Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da

  1. I like to make the case that it coulda/shoulda/woulda been a triple album. They could’ve done proper recordings of George’s “Sour Milk Sea” and “Circles,” then add “Hey Jude” and the single version of “Revolution.” Scatter those fours songs throughout, then make Side 6 all about John and Yoko’s madness with “What’s the New Mary Jane” and “Revolution #9.” And, with all that they still could’ve had “Lady Madonna”/”The Inner Light” as the pre-album single. Not that I’ve thought about this before 🙂 Excellent choice, Max.

    • LOL…Thank you. I love the way you think! You are correct…just adding Revolution, Hey Jude, Lady Madonna, The Inner Light, and Sour Milk Sea not to mention the others you listed would have made a great third album to add to it… How many bands would not add Hey Jude and Revolution to the album at least? Why The Inner Light didn’t get a spot is beyond me.

I edited the review down because I had at least another page but I will say this… I’m not usually big on remixes but the 2018 remix made me fall in love with the album again. The original tended to be a little muddy at times but now it’s like they are in the next room.

      Thanks again.

    • I agree with you Max on the 2018 re-issue of The White Album- really enhances the album- better than the original as far as sound. While I don’t have The White Album at #1 on my Beatles album rankings- it is on my Beatles Mount Rushmore.

    • It was a hard choice. I took the desert island idea to heart…more variety. Introgroove was right though…if just keeping it at a double album as it is…Hey Jude, Revolution, Lady Madonna, and the Inner Light would have boosted it quite a bit.

  2. Well written Max, glad it wasn’t picked by someone else first! Gotta admit, as I think we’ve discussed on our own blogs before, I’m one who thinks it would’ve been a much better single album but no denying what you say about the diverse range of music on it as well as their creativity. “Dear Prudence” is my fave on it and perhaps one of my top 5 or 6 overall Beatles songs, “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” is excellent too and, I think, the first time we really understood how good a writer George could be. My sweetie likes this album, though it’s not her favorite by the Fab four, but she has two older brothers who grew up in the late-60s and they both seem to prefer this one to all others.

    • Dave, you are not the only one who has said that believe me. It’s not an album like Revolver or Rubber Soul where every song is as accessible. I think what makes it great is… in spite of the different directions and styles it takes…it remains cohesive. They make a bunch of different parts into a whole.

It was hard picking between Revolver and this one…it really was hard. Diversity won out.

  3. Well, this one was bound to go high in the draft, so good job in landing this top prospect Please play it loud on your desert island so I can pick up the sound from mine. No argument from me as to why you chose this one over Revolver, Sgt. Pepper and Abbey Road, although it would be hard to leave those three behind.

  4. I had a feeling you’d pick this. Again like your personal reasons for liking this record. The “diverse” comment is also something I like in music. I guess all that individual creativity was a foreshadowing of what was coming. Different vocals is also something that appeals to me. Now you got he Beatles out of your system, what’s next?

    • That is a good question. I’m kicking around a few right now…you know my Trinity… I will have a rogue album on here later on that I don’t think anyone will pick from a band we both like. How about you? Another live or are you going studio?
This album has some memories built-in but also I can drop the needle on any of the 4 sides and be happy.

    • Yes those three always hover…they are really my base…not to say I don’t like others just as much…but my base were built on them

  5. Great choice, Max! I find it nearly impossible to select just one Beatles album to take on a desert island. If I absolutely had to, I think I’d go with Sgt. Pepper.

What I really is the campfire feel of the Esher demos that are included on the 2018 reissue Giles Martin managed.

    • Thanks, Christian…it was extremely hard…it’s like picking the favorite out of one of your kids lol. The diversity of it is what did it. They represented about every type of music you would want…and did it well.

  6. When I listen to The White Album, sometimes I go small and imagine walking through a candy story and eating various treats along the way. Other times I feel like an astronaut, traveling between various planets, each one a marvel. It’s always a lovely journey. Excellent choice, Max.

  8. I agree with you Max- I can’t imagine The White Album as a single album. Every song may not be a classic but it all fits in well together as a double album.
