This was the first hit song ever produced by Quincy Jones. Q had discovered her while she was singing in a Manhattan hotel. The song was first recorded in 1962 by The Chiffons. Jones was brought a couple hundred demos to the Gore family home and they were going over them when the song caught Lesley’s attention. It would turn out to be the only demo they went over that night that both Jones and Gore approved. The song was recorded on March 30, 1963 and released as a single in April. It hit #1 on June 1st.
“It’s My Party” was Lesley Gore’s first chart hit- she was seventeen when it reached #1. 1963 would be the most successful year of her career- she had 4 Top 5 hits that year- the others- “Judy’s Turn To Cry” #5, “She’s A Fool” #5 and “You Don’t Own Me” #2. She would never have another Top 10 hit. Over her career she had 19 Hot 100 hits with 11 making the Top 40. She died of lung cancer at the age of 68 in 2015.
