371. “Birthday’– Underground Sunshine. Intrepid. Pop. Written by John Lennon and Paul McCartney. B-side: “All I Want Is You.” A cover of The Beatles White Album track ‘Birthday” was the only hit Underground Sunshine would ever have. It went to #26 and spent 10 weeks in the Hot 100. Underground Sunshine was a rock quartet from Montello, Washington. Grade: B-.

372. “Marrakesh Express”- Crosby, Stills and Nash. Atlantic. Rock. Written by Graham Nash. B-side:”Helplessly Hoping.” The first hit single by Crosby, Stills and Nash- “Marrakesh Express” peaked at #28 and spent 8 weeks in the Hot 100. Crosby, Stills and Nash- along with Neil Young at times- would have 13 Hot 100 singles and 9 make the Top 40- more of an album oriented favorite than a hit singles factory. Their biggest hit was 1977’s “Just A Song Before I Go” #7. Grade: A
373. “I’m Free”- The Who. Decca. Rock. Written by Pete Townshend. B-side: “We’re Not Gonna Take It.” “I’m Free” from The Who’s iconic Tommy concept album- reached #37 and spent 8 weeks on the chart. It was the second of two Hot 100 hits The Who had in 1969. Grade: A.

374. ” Your Husband- My Wife”- Brooklyn Bridge. Buddah. Pop. Written by Irvin Levine and Toni Wine. B-side: “Everybody’s Cookin’. “Your Husband- My Wife” peaked shy of the Top 40 at #46 with 8 weeks on the chart. Their only Top 40 hit was a big one- #3 Worst That Could Happen” in 1968- all told the vocal quintet and seven piece band from Long Island had 7 Hot 100 hits. Grade: C

I had never seen that- not sure if they are following the same list I am- I got my list from a site that has a list of every Top 40 hit- it seems the same on spotify but maybe not the same order. 674 singles hit the Hot 100 in 1969.

I started playing the songs from 1969 on Spotify and I was surprised by how many I remembered and didn’t remember. I take it 1969 is your favorite year for music? I was always partial to 1965.
I picked 1969-the 50 year anniversary thing- last year I made posts about 1968… next year I will probably do 1970 but I haven’t decided for certain… thanks for that link- I haven’t seen that one before. Good stuff… the chart I am using on this is the Billboard chart. I think 1965-66 were the two greatest years. A few years ago I sat down and over the course of a month or so listened to every Hot 100 single from 1965. It would be hard to top 65-66 as the two best years.
This is an unusual grouping: 3 super hits and one mega-dud. That last one just plain cracks me up.
