Every Entry Into The Billboard Hot 100 Singles Chart- 1969- Part 105. The three singles for today all entered the chart on June 28, 1969 and all ended up in the Top 40. “Choice Of Colors”- The Impressions, “Good Old Rock and Roll”- Cat Mother And The All Night News Boys, and “Along Came Jones”- Ray Stevens.

331. ” Choice Of Colors”- The Impressions. Curtom. Soul. Written by Curtis Mayfield. B-side: “Mighty Mighty Spade and Whitey.” The second of three Hot 100 singles in 1969 by The Impressions. “Choice Of Colors” peaked at #21 and spent 11 weeks on the chart. Grade: A

332. “Good Old Rock and Roll”- Cat Mother and The All Night New Boys. Polydor. Rock.Written by Smith, Chin, Packer, Equine and Michaels. B-side: Bad News” A medley of old rock and roll classics: “Sweet Little Sixteen”, “Long Tall Sally”, “Chantilly Lace”, Whole Lotta Shakin Goin’ On”, “Blue Suede Shoes” and “Party Doll.” It was the only Hot 100 hit by this New York City group which was produced by Jimi Hendrix. The single peaked at #21 and spent 8 weeks on the chart. Grade: B

333. “Along Came Jones”- Ray Stevens. Monument. Country. Written by Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller. B-side:”Yakety Yak”- the single written by the great songwriting team of Leiber and Stoller was first made famous by The Coasters #9 in 1959. Stevens version went to #27 and spent 8 weeks on the chart. It was the 2nd of 3 Hot 100 hits for Ray Stevens in 1969- the follow up to his #8 Gitarzan. A little bit of Ray Stevens goes a long way. IMO. Grade: C

  1. I really like The Impressions song, very political in a good way. I enjoyed the medley which was well-done. I’ve heard a different version of Along Came Jones (The Coasters?) that is much better than this one.
