Hans Remembers- News Headlines from Monday July 21, 1969- the top news stories of the day didn’t even happen on planet Earth.
- After landing and walking on the Moon the previous day- Apollo 11 astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin on this day were attempting the most dangerous part of the entire mission- departing the lunar surface. Before leaving the astronauts unveiled a plaque which read ” We came in peace for all mankind” and set up the flag of the United States- and got a talk from the Tricky One in the White House, slept a little and then began to get ready to depart the Moon. If the rocket failed to get them off the Moon on the first try it would most likely leave them stranded for the rest of their lives. Of course it worked and with Buzz Aldrin piloting the Eagle docked again with Columbia and re-joined astronaut Michael Collins in the lunar orbiter. All that was left now was the trip home.
- The Soviet Union’s unmanned lunar probe Luna 15 wasn’t so lucky- they were hoping to land, collect some Moon rocks and get back to Earth before Apollo 11 did- but Luna 15 crashed into the Moon when it failed to slow during its descent- and at 300 MPH crashed about 500 miles from where Apollo 11’s landing site.
- Major League Baseball celebrating it’s 100th year anniversary named Babe Ruth the greatest player of all time and Joe DiMaggio the greatest living player. This year MLB is very quietly celebrating their 150th anniversary- in my opinion the greatest player ever would remain Ruth- the greatest living player? Willie Mays- who should have been named the greatest living player in 1969.
