“Time To Play B-sides”- “I Am The Walrus”- The Beatles. I could spend a few weeks just going over great b-sides of The Beatles singles. “I Am The Walrus”- was the b-side to the inferior “Hello Goodbye.” John Lennon wrote “I Am The Walrus”- Paul McCartney wrote “Hello Goodbye.” John campaigned hard to have his song as the A-side of the single but was voted down. This was something that stuck with him and played a role in his continuing dissatisfaction with being in The Beatles. “I Am The Walrus” is a bit out there-musically and lyrically whereas “Hello Goodbye” is clearly on the surface the more commercial tune- and it did go to #1. At this point I think The Beatles didn’t need an introduction to their audience- “I Am The Walrus” should have been the A-side and I have no doubt it also would have went to the top of the charts. What side of the single is the most heralded today? I would think it is “I Am The Walrus”- the B-side. I hear “Hello Goodbye” and after a couple listens you’ve got it- after 40 plus years of listening to “I Am The Walrus” I am still fascinated.
