  • The Rolling Stones “Honky Tonk Woman’ was released on this day in the U.S. It had been released in the UK a week earlier. In both countries “Honky Tonk Woman” would go to #1 and become a classic Stones song- I wonder when they last had a concert where it wasn’t played?

  • A relative unknown named David Bowie- on this day released a single called “Space Oddity”- in the UK it would go to #5 in the singles chart- in the US- it did nothing until 1973 when it was re-released and went to #15. The single was originally released just 9 days before Apollo 11 astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin would be walking on the Moon. The Bowie character in the song “Major Tom” would also be in future songs “Ashes To Ashes”, “Hallo Spaceboy” and in the video for “Blackstar.”

  • Speaking of space- 5 days before Apollo 11 was to begin its journey to the Moon- on July 16th- Sprague Electric Company delivered a silicon disc to be flown to the Moon to NASA- it would contain 73 messages of good will from the leaders of the world’s nations to be left on the Moon. The package would be adhered to one of the sleeves of Buzz Aldrin’s spacesuit. After the Moon walk was finished and Buzz was climbing back up into the lunar module Neil Armstrong had to remind him of the package- which Buzz Aldrin then tossed onto the lunar surface.

  1. You gotta admit, Honky Tonk Woman is a song good enough to be played at every concert. One of the best lines ever in a song, “She blew my nose and then she blew my mind.” Dave wrote on Bowie’s Space Oddity today and how much guff he got for it before they gave it a green light.

    • I think Honky Tonk Woman is one of those songs The Stones must play at every concert or their would be a fan revolt!

  2. It’s kind of funny, though, “tossing” the package down onto the moon before they left. It almost sounds like littering, doesn’t it? Lol
Also, I’m stunned to see that David Bowie and I sported almost the exact hairdo at one time! Except mine wasn’t blonde and it was actually the result of a haircut that I was furious about afterwards! Aaaahhh!
