Every Entry Into The Billboard Hot 100 Singles Chart- 1969- Part 18. All three singles on the list today- are new to my ears.
52.” Woman Helping Man”- The Vogues. Reprise. Pop. Written by Mark Charron. B-side-“I’ll Know My Love.” The Vogues were a vocal group from Turtle Creek, Pennsylvania a suburb of Pittsburgh. They had 14 singles reach the Hot 100 with 8 Top 40 hits. Their biggest hits came in 1965 with two singles reaching #4- “You’re The One” and “Five O’Clock World.” 1969 would be the end of their chart making days. “Woman Helping Man” peaked at #47 and spent 6 weeks in the Hot 100.This is by far the worst of the 54 songs I have done on this project it was a struggle – a long 3 minutes and I couldn’t listen twice. WOOF! Grade: F.
53. “Someday Soon”- Judy Collins. Elektra. Folk- Pop. Written by Ian Tyson. B-side “My Father.” The b-side is excellent- it is played now and then on Celtic Crush- a song written by Collins about her father. Too bad it wasn’t a hit single. “Someday Soon” reached #55 on the Hot 100 spending 6 weeks on the chart. “Someday Soon” was originally recorded by Ian and Sylvia in 1964 but not released as a single. Judy Collins is more of an album artist than a singles artist- she is still around 50 years later. She did have 11 Hot 100 chart singles with 5 reaching the Top 40. Judy Collins biggest hit was her cover of Joni Mitchell’s “Both Sides Now” #8 in 1968. Grade: B
54. “30-60-90″- Willie Mitchell. Hi. Soul- Funk. Written by Howard Grimes, James Mitchell, Lynn Hodges, Mabon Hodges and Willie Mitchell. B-side ” Take Five.” Willie Mitchell is best remembered for being a record arranger and producer who ran Royal Studios in Memphis- and in the 1970’s ran Hi Records- artists he was associated with include the great Al Green. “30-60-90” an instrumental- peaked at #69 spending 5 weeks in the Hot 100. In his career Mitchell placed 9 singles in the Hot 100 with 2 reaching the Top 40. His biggest hit-“Soul Serenade” #23 in 1968. “30-60-90” would be his final entry into the Hot 100. Willie Mitchell died in 2010 at the age of 81. Grade: B
